I want to remember Taylor's talk, I copied it down......
Hi, My name is Elizabeth and my Father is the former President Benjamin Harrison. His birthday is August 20, 1833. He was born in North Bend, OH. His Mom and Dad are Elizabeth and John Harrison. When he was a boy he was second of eight children and loved fishing an hunting. His wife was Caroline Scott. They had one Son and me Elizabeth. His Grand Father, William Henry Harrison was the ninth US President. He went to school in a 1 room school house then to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Before he became president he worked as a Crier for the Courts. He was responsible for yelling announcements through the streets. He joined the New Republican Party and worked for the Indiana Supreme Court. During the American Civil War he fought for the Union. In 1876 he ran unsuccessfully for Gov. of Indiana. Four years later he was elected to the US Senate. My Father served there from 1881 to 1887. Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States. He won the 1888 Election even though he got fewer votes then Grover Cleveland. He was the President from March 4 1889 to March 4 1893. While he was president he tried to make Hawaii a US Territory but Congress refused. In addition Harrison signed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890, this Act prevents companies from becoming to powerful.
My Father had one dog, one goat, four horses and opossums. Of all the goats that lived at the White House one stands out as the champion rascal: His Whiskers. My Father liked to give my children presents and pets and His Whiskers was one of their favorites. The billy goat would pull the kids around the White House in a little cart. One day they harnessed him up and the kids climbed on, but suddenly His Whiskers saw an open gate and made a dash for freedom, with my children on the cart behind him. Father ran to catch up to them waving his cane and clutching his top hat. The goat didn't stop for several blocks, long enough for many people to see the President chasing a run away goat down Pennsylvania Ave.
Was my Father afraid of the dark? No. He was afraid of the light. Electric lights were invented in his term. Harrison was sometimes called the "human ice berg" because he was so stiff and formal, when he met strangers. But, once he got to know a person he was warm and kind.
He died on March 13, 1901.
